New Leadership Series to Educate Community Leaders on Effective Governance, Sound Public Policy

LAS VEGAS - August 24, 2016 - Today, the Las Vegas Metro Chamber Foundation and the UNLV Greenspun College of Urban Affairs announce its new partnership, the Public Policy Leadership Series (PPL).  This new five-week course is designed to educate community leaders, particularly those interested in serving in public office or shaping public policy, on policy issues and engage in discussions to enhance personal leadership and communication development.

The PPL series will help educate participants on how to develop sound public policy, better understand functions and structure of government in Nevada and its funding sources and mechanisms, and learn best practices in public policy development.  It designed to appeal to individuals who hold (or want to hold) elected office or hold leadership positions in the public, private and non-profit sectors and want to engage in public policy and be effective change-makers.

The PPL Series will be taught by School of Public Policy and Leadership professors in the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs.  The series will present a range of policy topics as well as leadership development discussions. Topics will include:

Understanding the role of the elected official in the policy process
Learning how to be an effective elected official
Learning how to communicate with citizens and the media
Understanding the Nevada budgeting process, as well as sources of revenue and funding mechanisms
Learning tools to evaluate policies, including resources for better policy decisions
A Community Advisory Council, appointed by Robert R. Ulmer, Dean of the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, serves in an advisory role on topics and subjects that the Series should address. Council members are professionals from a cross-section of sectors who work in the public policy and government affairs arena, and provide feedback about practical areas of legislative and policy knowledge that should be strengthened through the program. The 2016 Community Advisory Council includes Bob Brown, Opportunity Village; Tim Cashman, The Cashman Companies; Denice Miller, MGM Resorts International; Paul Moradkhan, Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce; Alisa Nave-Worth, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck; Bill Noonan, Boyd Gaming; Gail Tuzzolo, Gail Tuzzolo & Associates; and Julie Wilcox, Southern Nevada Water Authority.

The Greenspun College of Urban Affairs is dedicated to personal and academic development, the advancement of a wide range of disciplines, and the improvement of public policy and professional practices
