Michael Gardner, M.D.
Dr. Michael Gardner, who directed UNLV Medicine’s curbside COVID-19 testing program, was named a Healthcare Hero by Nevada Business Magazine in the Humanitarian category.
Begun in March, the testing operation, Nevada’s longest-running test site, tested more than 17,000 Nevadans before it closed in August. Aware other drive-through testing programs set up in the country frequently turned chaotic when hundreds of cars showed up at the same time, Gardner, UNLV Medicine’s CEO & President, decided to do testing by appointment with live phone assistance.
In other testing programs that were to be by appointment, automated phone systems were used. Systems often became so overloaded that all callers got for hours, and sometimes days, was a busy signal, leaving the already overwrought even more frazzled. In Las Vegas, UNLV School of Medicine students, residents, medical assistants, physicians, and staff calmed worried callers while making appointments.
