A message of thanks to the community
Dear UNLV Friends and Supporters,
As I finish my tenure as UNLV president, I want to thank you for your confidence in me – and more importantly – this university. So much has transpired in a short, yet action-packed two years and we have accomplished an enormous amount together. You play a tremendous role in everything UNLV achieves.
The focus of the university has been and should continue to be student success, and the high-impact research and economic development that makes a difference in the state and the region. In broad terms, we need to collectively make sure UNLV remains a gate opener rather than a gate keeper – for its students and for the community. There is no more vital mission for this university.
Please join me in congratulating and welcoming the new incoming president, Dr. Keith Whitfield of Wayne State University, who will officially start Aug. 24. The selection of Dr. Whitfield as the next UNLV president is a milestone in our history, and he will quickly discover how dynamic and exciting UNLV is – and he will come to realize those attributes also apply to our community.
As far as my future plans, I will remain at UNLV doing what I love most – returning to scholarly work in my research field and teaching students. That’s how I began my career at UNLV and that’s how I want to finish. It brings me much joy and meaning.
When I first visited UNLV nearly 25 years ago, I fell in love with this university, and the community. I could see the unlimited potential, and although we’ve celebrated great progress and success, the opportunities are still endless and the next evolution will be even more phenomenal.
Thank you for your ongoing support of UNLV!
Marta Meana, Ph.D.
