With appreciation for his longtime support of UNLV, the university marks the passing of hospitality mogul and generous philanthropist Sheldon Adelson.

UNLV will always be grateful for Mr. Adelson’s numerous contributions to our community and many university programs. As founder of the Sands Corporation, he left an indelible mark on the worlds of gaming, politics, and philanthropy – and UNLV.

In 2014, Mr. Adelson and his company gave a multi-million-dollar gift to support the construction of UNLV’s premier Hospitality Hall. The Sands Corporation is also the namesake behind the Harrah College of Hospitality’s professional development center, which provides continuing education to industry employees worldwide.

Mr. Adelson was the inaugural speaker at the Hospitality College’s “Conversations on Leadership” event in 2014. In that same year, he and his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson, along with the Sands Corporation, were honored as members of the UNLV Foundation Palladium Society.

In 2018, Mr. Adelson and his company were among the generous donors who stepped up to fund the Fertitta Football Complex, a transformational project for UNLV Athletics. The following year, the Sands Corporation sponsored the UNLV Foundation Annual Dinner featuring former president George W. Bush as its speaker.

Hospitality College Dean Stowe Shoemaker called Mr. Adelson “a great friend to UNLV” and recognized his generosity and influence. “Mr. Adelson will have a lasting imprint on this college and community,” Dean Shoemaker said.

Mr. Adelson was a visionary leader and entrepreneur, loyal to his family, friends and employees. Most recently, he continued to employ his workforce throughout the pandemic.

The university and the UNLV Foundation leadership offer condolences to Dr. Adelson and the entire Adelson family, and all those who were close to him.
