Lee Business School Academic Advisor Named Professional Staff Member of the Year
John Starkey, an academic advisor in the Lee Business School, was named Professional Staff Member of the Year at the UNLV Rebel Awards April 21. He was selected from a field of 31 nominations across campus.
“I thank everyone that nominated me and felt honored to be recognized among such a great group of nominees,” said Starkey, who also teaches the First-Year Seminar course in the business school.
He credits the fast-paced nature of his job with keeping him energized.
“I couldn’t have won this award without being challenged by my students and colleagues to strive for excellence,” he said.
This is Starkey's second Rebel Award. He picked up the first, the Rebel Award for Outstanding Role Model, as an undergraduate student a few years ago.
The annual Rebel Awards program is hosted by the Division of Student Affairs and recognizes excellence in student programming, student leadership, staff leadership and advising, commitment to diversity or service, and outstanding student organizations.
“It is a way of acknowledging some of the excellent work occurring around campus and in ways that add richness and co-curricular excellence to the UNLV experience,” said Jon Tucker, director of Student Union and Event Services.
