The Lincy Institute and Brookings Mountain West, two public policy think tanks located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), exist due to the philanthropy of Kirk Kerkorian, who passed away June 15, 2015 at the age of 98.

Those familiar with the life of Kirk Kerkorian, including his legendary status in the gaming industry in Las Vegas, may be less familiar with his many philanthropic endeavors. That is not surprising, as Mr. Kerkorian went to great lengths to remain anonymous as a donor and supporter of numerous individuals, organizations, and causes around the globe.

Although a central figure in the establishment of the Lincy Institute and Brookings Mountain West, Mr. Kerkorian chose to have his gift recognized in honor of his friend U.S. Senator Harry Reid.

There are few, if any, who carry the name of Lincy and we will take this this opportunity to recommit to our mission to serve the interests of Las Vegas and Nevada. He loved and respected the Las Vegas region and, in particular, the many people who lived and worked to make this city both a global destination and a better place to raise a family and pursue one's dreams.

Many words will be written and spoken about the life and impact of Kirk Kerkorian here in Las Vegas. David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the UNLV Libraries, put Mr. Kerkorian's life in perspective when he wrote, "Indeed anyone who has enjoyed visiting or living in this city owes Kirk Kerkorian a debt of gratitude, for without him Las Vegas would be much smaller—in more than just room count."
