John Fildes, M.D.
Dr. John Fildes, the Associate Dean for External Affairs at the UNLV School of Medicine, has been honored with a Nevada Business Magazine Healthcare Heroes Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Also a professor and chair of the medical school’s department of surgery, Dr. Fildes served as the school’s interim dean from September 2019 through April 2020. Internationally renowned as a trauma surgeon, researcher, educator, and administrator, he established the nation’s first American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) approved Acute Care Fellowship.
Medical director of the UMC Trauma Center for 13 years and a leader in the medical response to the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shootings in Las Vegas that left 59 dead and 527 wounded, Dr. Fildes’ research has appeared in 67 peer-reviewed publications, including the American Journal of Surgery, the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, and Critical Care Medicine.
