Important information: Phase two of CARES Act funding for students
The first phase of federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funds are now fully awarded, and we are now moving to the second round of awards. Students who were awarded grants during the first phase received notification last week.
The request process for students who did not receive funding during the first phase opens today. The second phase of federal CARES Act awards is exclusively for students who were not awarded funds in the first phase of disbursements. An email notification will alert students who fall into this group and provide further instructions.
While the first phase of funding prioritized students with financial need, the second phase of disbursements is intended for students whose financial impacts due to COVID-19-related disruptions were not apparent based on their FAFSA application. Factors such as job loss, childcare or medical expenses, housing or food insecurity, an inability to pay for educational supplies, technology, or expenses are considerations.
The funds are limited and will not reach everyone nor fulfill the full need for those who do receive them. Awards will range from $500 to $1,000. Students in the second phase will have until May 15, 2020, to file their request for CARES Act funds, and the deadline to accept these funds is July 15, 2020.
UNLV’s Student Support staff continue to assist students remotely. Visit the FAQ page regarding CARES Act funds for more information. Questions may be submitted to Financial Aid and Scholarships or the Office of the Registrar at unlv.today/service.
