Honoring Founding Board Member Jerry Herbst
The UNLV Foundation would like to honor the contributions of founding Board of Trustees member Jerry Herbst, who passed away Nov. 27 in his home. He was 80.
In 1959, Herbst founded what became the well-known Terrible Herbst chain of convenience stores and gas stations. Today, there are more than 160 Terrible Herbst properties that employ 2,300 people in Southern Nevada. In 1996, he expanded the company into gaming, and in 2011, started a separate slot machine business. Herbst was also an avid motorsports enthusiast who was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.
His leadership at UNLV came at a critical time for the university. The UNLV Foundation and Board of Trustees was formed in 1981 to raise and manage private funds for the university, and the trustees were some of Vegas’ most influential leaders. Herbst was among those who volunteered their time and business acumen to promote the university. Through their generosity and service, the Board began raising UNLV’s profile, and strengthening the university’s missions of teaching, research and public support. Herbst was active on the board until 2009.
“Jerry Herbst realized the impact that UNLV would have on Southern Nevada, and how critical community involvement would be – and still is – for us to reach our goals as an institution,” said UNLV Acting President Marta Meana. “Jerry left an indelible mark on Southern Nevada, and our lives have been enriched by knowing him."
The UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees is honored to establish the Jerry Herbst Scholarship Endowment to recognize Herbst’s legacy. Annually, the payout from this fund will support UNLV students in perpetuity.
As an initial trustee, Herbst was a member of a prestigious group that includes some of Las Vegas’ most renowned leaders: Marjorie Barrick, Ernest Becker, James Cashman, Jr., George M. Dickerson, Michael Gaughan, Artemus W. Ham, William M. Laub, Jerome Mack, Sherman Miller, Irwin Molasky, Sig Rogich, Grant Sawyer, Kenneth Sullivan, E. Parry Thomas, Louis Wiener, Tom Wiesner, and Claudine Williams.
