Graduate Student Mentors

The Southern Nevada - Northern Arizona (SNNA) Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), a project funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF), seeks to hire Graduate Student Mentors (GSMs) for the upcoming fall 2018-spring 2019 academic year. 

SNNA-LSAMP GSMs will work for $16 per hour for 10 hours per week, for 40 weeks per year. This is not a GA position.

Candidates for this position must:

  • Be an enrolled UNLV graduate student in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline;
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to work with and counsel indviduals from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Knowledge of AANAPISI, LSAMP, TRIO, McNair, GEAR UP and/or similar programs for disadvantaged students is preferred;
  • Plan to remain in Las Vegas for Fall/Spring semesters in order to meet face to face with your mentee's.
  • Be available for the entire 18/19 academic year.

Job Description
This position will begin the week of August 13th for training and orientation. Each GSM will be assigned approximately 10-12 mentee’s and will be expected to meet (in-person and electronically) with each of his or her mentees (individually or in small groups) at least twice per month. In addition, GSMs will advise mentees on the graduate school application process, research, lead small group sessions and will complete administrative duties which include inputting session notes into a database.
