Former Dean Makes $50,000 Gift to Recognize Senior Faculty Research

Oct. 24, 2018

Former Dean James Frey has donated $50,000 to establish an award to recognize senior faculty for their scholarship in the College of Liberal Arts.

The gift will be used to create the James Frey Senior Faculty Excellence in Scholarship Award to provide financial support for tenured faculty based on scholarly accomplishments.

“I had a very satisfying career at UNLV personally and professionally, and I felt I should return something to the university for that. (Funding) this, along with the scholarship, is a way to do it,” Frey said.

The award will recognize one senior faculty member in the college each year. To be eligible, faculty must be full time; tenured at the rank of associate or full professor in the College of Liberal Arts; and must have been employed by UNLV for a minimum of five years.

A longtime supporter of the college, Frey established the James Frey Research Scholarship in 2013. The award is given annually to the top Ph.D. student researcher in the UNLV sociology department.

Frey joined UNLV as a junior faculty member in the Department of Sociology in 1974. His teaching and research specialties included sociology of sport, sociology of gambling, and research methods. He served two terms as chair of the sociology department and established UNLV’s Cannon Center for Survey Research and UNLV’s Center on Aging.

Frey was named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 2007 and dean a year later. During his tenure as dean, he started doctoral programs in anthropology, clinical psychology, and experimental psychology. He also led efforts to secure federal research funding, including almost $1 million for the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project, an interdisciplinary project between the UNLV history and sociology departments. In addition, he established the college’s Community Advisory and Alumni boards. He retired from UNLV in 2004.
