COLA Remembers Regent Sam Lieberman, Alumnus and Higher Education Advocate

Regent Lieberman speaking at a liberal arts event
Apr. 6, 2020

Dear Friends of the College,

I write to share some reflections about our dear friend, Nevada Regent Sam Lieberman. You may have heard in the news over the weekend that he passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 3.

Sam has been an integral part of the College of Liberal Arts family for more than two decades. After he received his degree in social work in 1996, which was then part of our college, he came back and served in several key roles. He was the founding member and president of our alumni chapter. Later he served on and chaired the Dean’s Leadership Board. Through the years, he was a mainstay at UNLV and college events, and remained an ardent supporter of all things liberal arts. For his outstanding service, we named him our 2009 Alumnus of the Year.

Sam used his many gifts to advocate for higher education, and especially, the benefits of liberal arts education. He represented the best in our college and the values we hold dear – decency, civility, respect for all, an appreciation for diversity, and the creation of new knowledge to make the world a better place. We knew Sam as an alum, regent, advocate, trailblazer, and most importantly, friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and had the privilege of working with him.

Here is the university’s official release about Sam, and his obituary can be read here. An online memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 7 at 10 a.m.

We will keep you apprised of future efforts to honor Sam’s life and memory.

With great sadness,

Jennifer Keene
