After working for what he calls 12 marvelous years, Dr. Rick Thiriot is retiring from the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.

During his tenure, Dr. Thiriot held multiple roles including associate dean for clinical services where he oversaw the operations of all patient clinics, interacted with the chair of clinical sciences to ensure the best possible patient care, and worked with numerous committees dedicated to improving school functions. Indirectly, he also managed the assignments and performances of all clinical and auxiliary staff members.

Looking back at his time with UNLV Dental, Dr. Thiriot noted three of his proudest moments, the first of which pertains to the Saturday Morning Community Service Clinics.

“For me, starting and directing the Homeless Clinic for eight years and serving as the community clinics’ director for almost 10 years are top moments for me,” he said. “I am also proud of the work Molly Burkhardt and I did in directing the patient funding program and helping patients afford the care they needed.”

Dr. Thiriot also placed on his list revamping the Grand Rounds course with Dr. Jonathan Rothbart and co-directing it with multiple faculty members, as well as helping graduating students prepare for and successfully pass the regional licensing exams, and achieving a 100 percent pass-rate during the 10 years he helped run the mock boards.

“Most precious to me are the memories and relationships I made during my time at the school,” Dr. Thiriot said. “Among my favorites are hooding students during graduation, working closely with Dr. Marcia Ditmyer, Dr. Robin Reinke, Dr. William Davenport, and Mr. Lorenzo Bethea, and teaching students during clinic. I already miss not being there.”

What’s next for Dr. Thiriot?

“Of course, I’m looking forward to spending extra time with my family. However, retirement is just the beginning of another chapter in my quest for enlightenment.”
