Awards Event Cancelled

Mar. 12, 2020

Across the history of medicine, it’s been our professional duty to respond to contagion and pandemic. In the 1950’s medical professionals had to deal with a polio outbreak. In the 1980’s it was HIV/AIDS. Today, it’s coronavirus, COVID-19.

As an academic medical center, it is our role to not only heal the sick and wounded, but to provide steady leadership during a medical crisis.

With that in mind, I have decided to postpone the UNLV School of Medicine and UNLV Medicine Recognition Awards ceremony planned for March 19th.

After consulting with public health officials, and out of an abundance of caution, I think it will be unwise to bring together a large group of people at this time. Protecting the health and welfare of our students and staff is of the utmost importance, and we will not take any unnecessary chances of spreading coronavirus.

We look forward to rescheduling the awards ceremony at a later date.

Additionally, at the direction of the Nevada System of Higher Education, we are preparing, if necessary, to transition to remote/virtual instruction no later than April 3rd.

I want to thank all of you who are on the front lines of this outbreak.

We are establishing a coronavirus information page on the UNLV School of Medicine website to provide timely updates from the CDC and Southern Nevada Health District, as well as important messages from UNLV leadership.

Going forward, we will keep you updated on any changes in the School of Medicine’s daily schedule.

As always, thanks for your expertise and understanding.

Dr. John Fildes, Dean
