Announcing the 2017-2018 UNLV Performing Arts Center Season
The UNLV Performing Arts Center is pleased to announce the 2017-2018 Season.
Our home, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is different, daring, and diverse, and the UNLV PAC is, too. We’re excited to bring you five artists and one group that have never performed here. By popular demand, we’re bringing back one artist and one group that are doing new works. If you like chamber music, we continue our partnership with the UNLV School of Music to present the Dorian Wind Quintet and Lydian String Quartet, along with three concerts by UNLV faculty.
The season opens on September 29 with Taylor Davis, a violinist, YouTube sensation, composer, avid gamer, and proud nerd, who performs her own work and popular music. The other artists performing this fall are guitarist Ricardo Cobo on October 20 performing tangos y sones cubanos (a genre originating in Cuba circa 1920); Cantus, “the premiere men’s vocal ensemble in the U.S.,” performing with the Green Valley High School Choir on November 3; and the Montreal Guitar Trio on December 1 performing music from Danzas: Spanish Guitar, their most recent CD.
Spring’s menu of performances begins with smooth jazz guitarist and composer Ken Navarro on February 3. In March, we’re bringing back the comic opera stylings of Gilbert & Sullivan, when the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players perform The Pirates of Penzance, backed by a live orchestra, on March 9. On April 5, we honor the first leader of the Performing Arts Center and UNLV’s 60th Anniversary, with a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 by the Seattle Symphony with Jeremy Denk on piano, directed by Ludovic Merlot. The 41st season ends on April 27 with one of the most intriguing theatrical performances we’ve seen in a while – Shadow Theatre: Fireflies. Using only their bodies, props, and light, this group creates worlds for the audience to visit.
