American premiere of "Flight of Falcons," written by UNLV Division of Wind Band Studies professor Anthony Labounty

Dec. 31, 2020

The Foothill High School Wind Symphony, under the direction of UNLV alum and Music Education faculty Travis Pardee (MM '02, Instrumental Conducting), will be presenting a very special virtual concert experience tonight. It's the American premiere of "Flight of Falcons," written by UNLV Division of Wind Band Studies professor Anthony Labounty, and commissioned by the late John E. Tucker, who passed away on December 10, 2020.

The Foothill High School Wind Symphony was originally scheduled to premiere the composition at the 2020 Clark County School District Advanced Band Festival on Friday, March 13, 2020, but due to COVID-19, the performance was cancelled. The students have recorded audio and video of themselves performing the music from their homes, playing with a click track and a video of Mr. Pardee conducting. These audio and video files have been synced together to create a stunning, virtual-American-premiere of Professor Labounty's thrilling piece. The piece received its world premiere in the L’Eglise de la Madeleine in Paris, France on June 4, 2019 while the band was representing the United States in the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings of World War II. From Travis Pardee: “Flight of Falcons was commissioned for the Foothill High School Wind Symphony by our dear friend John E. Tucker, and we produced it in collaboration with him. He accompanied Foothill to our world premiere in Paris in June 2019, and tonight’s American premiere is presented in loving memory of John."

Mr. Tucker has been a friend to the School of Music and UNLV for more than 30 years. He was a member of the UNLV Community Band and the UNLV Pep Band; and as Professor Labounty notes, he made a difference in the lives of many. "John will be missed not only as a person, but as an integral part of the fabric of the School of Music. I don't remember a time when he wasn't in the Community Band, and he was responsible for several commissions for the Wind Orchestra. John was always helping."

You can catch the virtual concert tonight at 7:00 p.m. (PST) on the Foothill High School Music's YouTube channel- or at The video will remain on the YouTube channel for future viewing. Congratulations to the dedicated and talented students, faculty and staff at Foothill High School, to Tony Labounty; and our deepest gratitude and respect to the life of Mr. John E. Tucker for his kindness, generosity, and the great legacy he left to the Southern Nevada musical community.
