Burn Fellowship Program

In 2015 a Burn Surgery Program for fellows interested in Burn Surgery was added. This program runs simultaneously with the ACGME Approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and AAST Approved Acute Care Surgery Fellowship that currently exist. This program is optional and incoming fellows must indicate their interest at the beginning of their fellowship.

This two three-month program is dedicated to treating acutely burned patients in the Burn Center at the University Medical Center. Upon completion of the program, fellows will receive a certificate of Added Qualifications in Burn Surgery and will be proficient to administer care and run a burn unit.

Prerequisites for Enrollment

  1. Applicants must have completed a 5 year accredited residency in general surgery.
  2. Applicants must have satisfied all admissions criteria for Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.
  3. Applicants must have satisfied all admissions criteria for Acute Care Surgery Fellowship.
  4. Must express a motivated interest in obtaining Added Qualifications in Burn Surgery prior to beginning Surgical Critical Care fellowship.

** Not all SCC/ACS fellows will be enrolled in the Added Qualifications of Burn Surgery Program unless specifically stated and agreed upon by the Program Director and Medical Director of Burn Surgery at the beginning of the academic calendar year.

Goals

Fellows enrolled in the Added Qualifications of Burn Surgery program in addition to the ACS and SCC will gain added knowledge and expertise to:

  • Obtain a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Burn Surgery.
  • Be clinically proficient to manage the complex and critically ill burn patients.
  • Be clinically proficient in complex burn patients including acute care, surgical critical care and wound management as well as scar and reconstructive procedures.
  • Direct and manage a clinical burn service and regional program.
  • Be leaders administratively and academically in the field of burns.
