The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Department of Emergency Medicine’s faculty physicians, residents, and fellows work as members of the University Medical Center (UMC) of Southern Nevada’s Emergency Department (ED). UMC, the partner hospital of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, is a high-acuity county facility that serves as a community safety net, caring for a vulnerable and under-served population in addition to the more than 40 million tourists who visit the city of Las Vegas every year. As the front door to the vast majority of UMC patients, we pride ourselves on delivering the highest level emergency care in the Las Vegas region. Last year, the department provided emergency medical care to close to 114,000 patients, including more than 26,000 pediatric patients and over 14,800 trauma patients. The hospital uniquely has three separate emergency departments: an Adult Emergency Department, a Pediatric Emergency Department, and an 11-bed Trauma Resuscitation Department.

The faculty of our department are a dynamic and passionate group with active involvement in multiple areas of local, regional, and national leadership and service in the field of emergency medicine. Many of our faculty are also involved in event medicine and professional sports in Las Vegas, including the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Football League (NFL), National Finals Rodeo, and numerous professional boxing and mixed martial arts fights. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) activities of the faculty include medical direction at several National Park Service sites, EMS medical direction of the paramedic training program at the College of Southern Nevada, EMS medical direction for the Southern Nevada Health District and regional ambulance agencies, as well as volunteer service as tactical physicians for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team. The department of emergency medicine has a fully-developed research assistant program with approximately 30 research volunteers to assist with the research efforts and scholarly activities of our faculty and residents.
