State Training for Supervisors

According to the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) 284.498, employees with supervisory responsibilities for Classified staff are required to complete six (6) specific trainings to familiarize supervisors with the unique terms and conditions associated with Nevada State employment.

Training Requirements

The following information represents the specific training requirements for supervisors of Classified staff as outlined in NAC 284.498:

Completed within six (6) months of assuming supervisory responsibilities:

  • Evaluating employee performance

Completed within twelve (12) months of assuming supervisory responsibilities:

  • Equal employment opportunity
  • Interviewing and hiring
  • Alcohol and drug testing
  • Progressive disciplinary procedures
  • Handling grievances

Additionally, these trainings must be repeated every 3 years to remain in compliance. If you have not taken these trainings in the past three (3) years, you will have to re-take them to remain compliant.

Online Training

The State of Nevada Online Professional Development Center hosts online courses that have been approved by the Division of Human Resource Management to meet these specific training requirements.

Directions for Accessing Online Training – Please Read all the Information

  1. To get started, access the NVeLEARN site.
  2. Click on the “Log-in & Course Enrollment Instructions”, which provides detailed instructions on how to navigate the NVeLEARN site.
  3. You must have an NVAPPS account to access the courses. Follow the instructions on the NVeLEARN Home page to determine:
    1. If you already have an NVAPPS account.
    2. How to create an NVAPPS account.
    3. Create an NVAPPS account.
  4. Once you have an NVAPPS account, you will need to create your profile.

  5. Once you are logged in, select the course catalog link in the main menu block of the NVeLEARN home page.
    1. Select State of Nevada Employees
    2. Select Mandatory Training for Supervisors
      1. Select the course title.
      2. When the page updates, select the ‘Enroll Me’ button at the bottom of the page.
      3. Click the ‘Select to Begin Class’ button on the course home page to begin the course.

Important Information about the Online Training

  • Please keep in mind that there is a “Mastery Test” at the conclusion of each training. A score of at least 70% must be achieved in order to receive credit for the course. Should you receive a score lower than 70%, you will need to re-take the course; however, the program not allow that particular course to be re-taken for 30 calendar days.
  • It is very important that you do the following at the completion of each course:
    • Complete the course evaluation.
    • Print a certificate of completion.

    If the certificate is not printed and the evaluation is left incomplete, credit for taking the course will not be reflected in your Training History at the end of each quarter. While there is instruction that directs you to send the certificate to Human Resources, these certificates are to be kept for your own records or within your departmental records. Please do not forward certificates of completion to Human Resources.
  • The State will provide Human Resources with a quarterly report that includes the names of UNLV employees who have successfully completed each of the six (6) required courses. This report will be generated from your UNLV email address, which is why it is important that your UNLV email address be listed in your NVeLEARN profile.
  • The courses that have been completed will be added to the employee’s Training History at the end of each quarter. This means that if you successfully completed one or more of the required courses, they will not be visible in your Training History immediately. This is why you will want to keep copies of your certificates of completion for your records.

Training History

To access your Training History and determine which trainings you have already completed, go to your EQUUS Employee Self-Service account. Once there, enter your employee ID and password and click on Secure Log In. Next, click on the UNLV tab (at the top). Click on ESTER and then click on Human Resources Staff Development. You should then see a list of trainings that you have either completed or are currently registered for.
