Writing Center Workshop: Avoiding Plagiarism
The Writing Center will be presenting a three part workshop on the topic of avoiding plagiarism. Attendees are welcome to attend the whole presentation or specific sections.
12-12:30 p.m. - The Basics
- Writers will learn the basic definitions associated with documentation: plagiarism, annotation, citation, direct quote, summary, and paraphrase. They will also practice identifying inadvertent plagiarism in their own writing.
12:30-1:15 p.m. - Close Reading, Annotation, and Tracking Sources
- Writers will learn and practice some basic strategies for close reading, annotation, and tracking sources as they write.
1:15-2 p.m. - Quoting and Paraphrasing
- Writers will learn and practice some basic strategies for using direct quotes and paraphrasing, and will also learn to identify common forms of inadvertent plagiarism. We will practice suing a five-part system to ensure that documentation of sources is complete.
This event is free and open to students, faculty, and staff.
