Join Nathan Slife and Chelsie Hawkinson for a discussion on how to help college students make the successful transition into university life. By reinforcing active community participation through service learning, as well as communication and critical thinking skills, they are helping first-year, second-year, and transfer students increase their success in other classes and throughout their college experience.

Nathan Slife, Ph.D.

Associate professor in residence, Department of Educational Psychology, Leadership, & Higher Education

Nathan Slife coordinates the First and Second-Year Seminar Program in the College of Education. He obtained his B.A. in social science studies from UNLV, M.A. in college student personnel from the University of Maryland, College Park, and Ph.D. in higher education from UNLV. Slife is passionate about teaching UNLV students and supporting the ongoing development of graduate assistant, part-time, and full-time faculty. In addition to teaching undergraduate seminars, he also teaches graduate courses in the Department of Educational Psychology and Higher Education. Slife previously worked in student affairs at the University of Maryland, College Park, La Salle University in Philadelphia, and Tulane University in New Orleans.

Chelsie L. Hawkinson, Ph.D.

Associate professor in residence, Department of Educational Psychology, Leadership, & Higher Education

Chelsie L. Hawkinson specializes in the collegiate first-year experience and students in transition. She primarily teaches first and second-year students in the First and Second-Year Seminar Program. As a long-time practitioner of first-year seminars and learning communities, her teaching and research are centered around student engagement and success. In her practice, she prioritizes student exposure to key features of high-impact educational practices that provide equitable access to learning such as frequent feedback and interaction with faculty members. Hawkinson previously served as first-year seminar coordinator at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.
