Speakers

Jungnam Kim, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Department of Counselor Education, School Psychology, and Human Services

Jungnam Kim is an associate professor of counselor education and joined the College of Education in 2020. She received a Ph.D. in counselor education from the University of Maryland-College Park and was formerly an assistant professor in the school counseling program at Ball State University. Before coming to the U.S., she had 11 years of experience as an elementary school teacher in South Korea. Dr. Kim’s scholarship and research focuses on school counselors’ roles in facilitating parents’ sense of empowerment, increasing college access and opportunity through college-going culture, and reducing educational barriers for marginalized groups (e.g., Asian ethnic subgroups). Dr. Kim’s work has been published in various scholarly journals and books including Journal of Counseling and Development and Professional School Counseling Journal, the flagship research journals for the American Counseling Association (ACA) and American School Counseling Association (ASCA). She has served on the editorial boards in the Journal of Counseling and Development, Professional School Counseling Journal and Korean Journal of Parents and Guardians.

Katrina Liu, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Department of Teaching and Learning

Dr. Katrina Liu earned her Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with specializations in teacher education and educational leadership and policy analysis. Dr. Liu's current research includes preparing critically reflective teachers for transformative learning, developing self-sustaining communities of practice for teacher professional development, and understanding social capital and resilience among teachers of color. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, Educational Review, and The Social Studies. Dr. Liu has also secured and managed several grants including a Fulbright Group Projects Abroad award for teacher professional development overseas and a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater outreach grant to support teachers to implement personalized learning in their classrooms.

Jenna Weglarz-Ward, Ph.D.

Dr. Jenna Weglarz-Ward is honored to be joining UNLV during this exciting time when the university is working hard to be the best it can be both in preparing future professionals and producing innovative and relevant research to help each of our specific fields reach new heights. She hopes to contribute my ability to connect research, policy, and practice in the areas of early childhood and special education and build relationships within and outside the university to make our efforts meaningful to children, families, community members, and professionals.

Claire Tredwell, Ph.D.

Director, UNLV/CSUN Preschool,

Dr. Claire Tredwell studies how providing an inclusive environment in early childhood for children with disabilities promotes positive social, emotional, cognitive, and language outcomes for children.

Marla Royne Stafford, Ph.D.

Professor, Marketing & International Business

Dr. Marla Royne Stafford joined the Harrah College in July of 2019 as the Executive Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to help build and support the College of Hospitality in achieving the Top Tier goals set by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to her 26+ years in academic as a professor, department chair, and dean in the business discipline, Dr. Stafford spent time in industry in marketing, communications, and training development. Her time in academia has resulted in numerous publications, professorships, grants and awards including the 2016 Ivan Preston Award for Outstanding Contribution to Advertising Research and the 2009 and 2017 University of Memphis Alumni Association Awards for Outstanding Research in Social Sciences, Business and Law. She has also received several best paper awards over the years. Dr. Stafford is the past Editor in Chief of the Journal of Advertising and past president of the American Academy of Advertising.

About the Scholarship in Practice Web Lecture Series

Aligned with UNLV’s Top Tier goal of community engagement, the Scholarship in Practice Web Lecture Series is a forum offered to local and national communities to discuss critical issues and propose concrete solutions on topics related to PK-20 education and mental health. Steeped in the latest scholarship, lectures are designed to support educators, practitioners, and other stakeholders. The UNLV College of Education provides approximately six to eight lectures per year.
