Description
Erick Bandala, assistant reseach professor at Desert Research Institute, will speak at an upcoming Virtual Science Café Las Vegas. His virtual presentation is titled, "Exposure to Extreme Heat in Las Vegas: What are the Effects on our Health?"
Heat stress is an important factor affecting the health of Las Vegans. We used hourly temperature and humidity data from Las Vegas and data of heat-related deaths to assess the effect of extreme heat on the population. From 2007–2016, the number of heat wave events per year increased. Although heat waves tended to be shorter, they were more severe. The number of heat-related deaths was also found to increase, with 2016 having the highest number of heat-related deaths. For the period, 437 heat-related deaths were registered in Las Vegas. The most vulnerable subpopulation was people over 50 years old, for which 76 percent of the heat-related deaths were associated with preexisting heart disease.
The virtual presentation will be presented via Webex.
