“Influence of Microorganisms on Mineral Formation: How Microbe-Mineral Interactions Can Help Us Look for Life on Other Planets”

with Dr. Aude Picard

Assistant Research Professor, UNLV College of Sciences

School of Life Sciences

Microorganisms have been the first inhabitant of Earth and have made the planet habitable for complex life. Now, is there life on Mars? Detecting life on another planet is the biggest challenge of the field of Astrobiology. In this presentation, I will give an overview on how microorganisms influence the mineral and modify the physical and chemical properties of minerals. Finally, I will discuss how biominerals could preserve traces of microbial life and help us to identify traces of life in the Martian subsurface.
