A View from El Paso: The Immigration Crisis in Context

Sep. 17, 2019, 7:30pm to 9pm

The College of Liberal Arts, University Forum Lecture Series presents “A View from El Paso: The Immigration Crisis in Context,” a talk by Todd A. Curry, Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Texas, El Paso

Nationally-led rhetoric regarding immigration on the border likens what is occurring to a crisis, and it is, though not how the discussion is being nationally framed. There is, simultaneously, a healthcare crisis, a humanitarian crisis, and a legal crisis that is potentially a constitutional crisis. This talk will explain how El Paso became the focal point of the immigration debate, highlighting the asylum process through the stories of asylum seekers. The talk concludes with a discussion of how to secure the border while avoiding a constitutional crisis.
