A piece of modern art displayed in the Marjorie Barrick Museum

Description

Visit us before the end of the month to find out how a group of Las Vegas art students chose to respond to one of the most famous conceptual artists of the 20th century.

Last October, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art invited students from Valley High School to create work in response to “Untitled” (L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957 - 1996). The late Cuban American artist shared his private experiences with a public audience by creating inclusive participatory concepts that subverted the usual expectations of the formal art world. The students have studied his work and developed paintings, sculptures, and installations that express their own ideas about some of his themes — grief, love, memory, and the complex delicacy of gift-giving.

Their interpretive pieces will be on view next to “Untitled” (L.A.) in the Marjorie Barrick Museum’s Workshop Gallery from January 17 - 28, 2023.

Untitled (Valley High School) features work by Ahtziry Alcocer-Amaro, Monica Benitez-Espinoza, Stephanie Bray, Diana Cardenas, Johanna Cooke, Craig Deaderick, Salvador Diaz-Morones, Angelique Esparza, Nakalyah Fabello, Juliana Soto Hernandez, Gloria Miranda, Kylee Mitchell, Kimberly Ordonez, Erandi Rendon, Idali Olmos Rosas, Nevaeh Sitton, Chance Smith, Ezer Soulimen, and Dafne Valderrama.

This pop-up exhibition takes place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. Face masks are recommended. Untitled (Valley High School) was made possible through a partnership with Valley High School art educators Stephanie Bray, Chance Smith, and Alissa Ward.
