UNLV Community Engagement Council: January Community Partner Presentations

Jan. 25, 2021, 1pm to 2pm

Office/Remote Location

Each month, UNLV's Office of Community Engagement invites leaders from community nonprofits and government agencies to make presentations about their partnership interests at the meeting of the UNLV Community Engagement Council. These presentations provide community partners with a convenient way to connect with UNLV faculty and staff – at one place and time – to promote collaboration and shared understanding of community goals. All faculty and staff are invited to attend the community partner presentation portion of the council's monthly meetings. Details regarding the next partner presentations are below.

  • Presentation #1 – Liz Ortenburger, Chief Executive Officer, SafeNest - SafeNest is Nevada’s largest, most comprehensive nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic violence by focusing on five core confidential, trauma-informed services: emergency shelter, 24/7 crisis hotline, counseling, advocacy and prevention education. SafeNest maintains the only confidential domestic violence shelter in Las Vegas; operates a 24-hour crisis hotline (which is sole access point of emergency protection orders in Clark County) and a text-to-chat line; provides individual and group counseling; maintains victim advocates in the justice and law enforcement systems; and provides domestic violence education, prevention, and training programs within the Clark County community. Across all programs, SafeNest provides direct services to more than 20,000 clients annually.
  • Presentation #2 – Martin Malmberg, Community Engagement Director, Olive Crest - Olive Crest is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse, the education and treatment of at-risk children, and to preserving the family unit. Each child, teen, family or parent they serve comes with unique needs, backgrounds and stories, and requires varying levels of care. Programs and services are tailored to meet their individual needs, and to help set a course that will lead to safety and transformation. Services include foster care for individuals and siblings, transitional housing programs for teens and young adults, and mental health services for individuals and families. Olive Crest strives to transform the lives of at-risk children through the healing power of family.
