Office/Remote Location

Dr. Arturo Rando Grillot Recital Hall

The UNLV Choral Ensembles present “The Flattened Earth” on Thursday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Rando Recital Hall located on the northeast end of the university campus in the Lee & Thomas Beam Music Center. The concert features three of the university’s five choirs in European choral music written when people still believed the Earth was flat, along with music drawn from countries around the world. Joseph Svendsen conducts the Concert Singers and Argenta, and the Varsity Glee Club is conducted by David Weiller. The choirs are joined by collaborative pianists Zheni Atanasova and Maria Kolesnyk.

Highlights of the program include “Viridissima Virga” by medieval composer and Christian mystic Hildegard von Bingen, “O sacrum convivium” by English composer Thomas Tallis, and “Sweet Love Doth Now Invite” by English composer and lutenist John Dowland. The choirs explore music of the wider world through arrangements by contemporary Irish composer Michael McGlynn, along with songs from Brazil, Tanzania, and Hungary.

The university choral ensembles enjoy a reputation for vibrant performances. The choirs recently were praised for a concert described as “…glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses performed with unaffected charisma.” Annual tours have encompassed the southwestern United States as well as Hawaii, New York, Mexico, and Canada.
