The UNLV Choral Ensembles present their annual fall concert \The concert theme, “O Music,” features 200 singers in celebration of the inspirational power of music and poetry in our world. Joseph Svendsen and David Weiller conduct the choirs in collaboration with pianists Zheni Atanasova, Barbara Buer, and Siyu Yang. The Chamber Chorale from the College of Southern Nevada, conducted by Mark Wherry, perform as guest artists.
The University Chorale presents “The Road Not Taken,” with poetry by Robert Frost set to music by American composer Randall Thompson. The Concert Singers perform the jubilant “Exultate Deo” by Italian Baroque composer Alessandro Scarlatti and the tender “Grace Before Sleep” by contemporary American composer Susan Labarr, set to the poetry of Sara Teasdale. The Las Vegas Master Singers, one of the city’s premiere choral organizations and chorus-in-residence for the Las Vegas Philharmonic, explore sacred music by Italian Renaissance master, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, along with the meditative poetry of Lebanese-American writer Kahlil Gibran in composer David Brunner’s “O Music,” and Michael Hennagin’s “Give Me the Splendid Silent Sun,” with poetry adapted from Walt Whitman’s famous “Leaves of Grass.”
At the conclusion of the concert, all UNLV choir alumni and friends are invited to join in the traditional singing of the “UNLV Alma Mater,” written by internationally acclaimed composer and UNLV choir alumnus, Eric Whitacre.
The university choral ensembles enjoy a reputation for vibrant performances that have been described as “…glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses perform with unaffected charisma.” Annual tours have encompassed the southwestern and northwestern United States as well as Hawaii, New York, Mexico, Canada, and Europe.
The UNLV choral concert season continues with the 35th annual Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival (November 1 at UNLV) and “Simple Gifts” (November 22 at UNLV).
