Description
The College of Liberal Arts’ University Forum Lecture Series presents ’Sex on Wax’: Alex North’s Music for Hollywood Southerns, a talk by Jonathan R. Lee, assistant professor, School of Music, UNLV.
In the 1950s, Hollywood’s go-to composer for movies about the American South was a Yankee, Philadelphian Jew, ironically named Alex North (1910-1991). This talk will explain his success in this field, examining three films: People of the Cumberland (1937), A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), and The Long, Hot Summer (1958).
