University Forum- Illicit Monogamy: How Romantic Love Undermined Plural Love in an American Polygamous Community
Can people love more than one person at the same time? To answer this question I will provide copious stories of polygamous men and women who struggle trying to achieve what was for many the "highest level of existence" plural love or when everyone within the family loves each other equally. In effect, plural families strive to love everyone equally.
Based on 6 years of research I will convey how members of an American religious community have confronted, struggled with, and managed and mismanaged their efforts to come to terms with this issue. Understanding how and why plural love remains for most a practical and existential struggle provides further insight into what it means to be a family.
