The College of Liberal Arts' University Forum lecture series presents "How Russians Lost Faith in Capitalism & Democracy and What it Means for Russia's Future" a talk by Aleksei Miller, Professor, European University, St. Petersburg, Russia.
At the end of 1980s, the majority of Russians believed that their lives would become better by adopting democracy and the free market. Within a decade, however, Russians had become deeply disappointed by the resulting experience. What actually happened to cause this shift in attitude and what are its implications for popular and elite visions of Russia’s future today? In what sense is Russia now experiencing an unprecedented moment in history? Drawing on deep knowledge of Russia’s long-term historical trajectory, Dr. Miller explores these questions, which have large implications for political order across the globe.
