The College of Liberal Arts' University Forum lecture series presents "The Dark Side of Data: The Impact of Algorithms on Social Inequity" a talk by Hilla Sang, Data Visualization & GIS Specialist; and Chelsea Heinbach, Assistant Professor, Teaching and Learning Librarian; UNLV.
This talk explores the problematic outcome of automating processes through seemingly objective algorithms. When meaning- and decision-making is outsourced to proprietary black-box algorithms, how is social inequity perpetuated?
