Description

The College of Liberal Arts' University Forum lecture series presents What is “Baroque” About Baroque Music? a talk by Jonathan Rhodes Lee, assistant professor, UNLV.

What is “baroque” about baroque music? This word was used as early as 1734 to describe works that were considered unnatural, gaudy, and even morally questionable. This talk supplemented by demonstrations from a harpsichord, will explain what eighteenth-century writers found so offensive, considering that aesthetics of ornament, encyclopedism, and grandeur associated with baroque music.

This University Forum lecture is offered in conjunction with the Las Vegas Baroque Festival, presented by the UNLV School of Music April 20–23, 2017.
