Surrealism in Music
The College of Liberal Arts, University Forum Lecture Series presents “Surrealism in Music,” a talk by Dr. Ivan Ivanov, Scholar CFA, UNLV
Ivanov's research brings to light the rarely examined topic of surrealism in music. It illuminates the Spanish-American composer Leonardo Balada as a key representative of that style, unveiling his collaboration with the prominent surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Dali had a profound influence on the formation of Balada’s style of composing, influencing him to incorporate surrealist ideas into his music. This research considers some of the scholarly works on surrealism in music, as well as demonstrates a unique theory based analysis explaining the surreal technique within music composition.
