The UNLV College of Sciences is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018-19. To commemorate the anniversary, Brian Hedlund from the School of Life Sciences will present a public lecture. His talk is titled, "Expanding the Tree of Life: Biodiversity Exploration in Geothermal Springs." Dr. Hedlund will discuss how major advancements in biotechnology and computing have enabled the exploration of microbial life.
In 1958, UNLV’s College of Science and Mathematics was formed. The following year, Robert Smith began serving as the founding dean with nearly 500 undergraduate and 41 graduate students enrolled. In Fall 2018, the college had approximately 2,500 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students.
