The UNLV College of Sciences is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018-19. To commemorate the anniversary, Elisabeth Hausrath from the Department of Geoscience will present a public lecture. Her talk is titled, "Rock, Soil, and Water on Mars: Understanding Mars' Past and Planning for the Future." Recent discoveries from Mars have shown the presence of past liquid water, important for climate and habitability. Dr. Hausrath will discuss how this water has interacted with rocks and soils, and what it might mean for possible past life and the future exploration of Mars.
In 1958, UNLV’s College of Science and Mathematics was formed. The following year, Robert Smith began serving as the founding dean with nearly 500 undergraduate and 41 graduate students enrolled. In Fall 2018, the college had approximately 2,500 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students.
