The UNLV College of Sciences is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018-19. To commemorate the anniversary, Arthur Baragar from the Department of Mathematical Sciences will present a public lecture. His talk is titled, "Circle Packings and the Markoff Equation." The Apollonian circle packing and the Markoff equation are two popular topics in mathematics that, on the surface, appear to be unrelated. Dr. Baragar will guide us deep into the mathematics that connects them.

In 1958, UNLV’s College of Science and Mathematics was formed. The following year, Robert Smith began serving as the founding dean with nearly 500 undergraduate and 41 graduate students enrolled. In Fall 2018, the college had approximately 2,700 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students.
