Description

Climate change is about more than melting ice caps, sea level rise, and polar bears and penguins. Warming temperatures impact everyone, even here in southern Nevada. Since the onset of the Industrial Revolution, Nevada has warmed by an average of ~2ºF. The Las Vegas region has warmed by over 6ºF in that time period, making our community one of the fastest warming in the entire United States. Intense heat has always been a characteristic of southern Nevada, but even modest temperature increases impact our health, our air quality, our water supply, and other aspects of our daily lives. Dr. Averyt will present an overview of the changing climate of southern Nevada and what it means for the greater Las Vegas community in the context of recent and emerging policy actions.

Presenter: Dr. Kristen Averyt, Research Professor, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost
