Description
Join the Philosophy Department for a screening and discussion of the documentary "13th", which explores the intersection of race, (in)justice, and mass incarceration in the United States. According to the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, slavery is unconstitutional, except when it comes to criminals. As it is stated, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Given this constitutional "loophole," there's a worry that the prison system may be, and is actually used, as a tool for the modern-day enslavement of African Americans. This documentary raises pressing and difficult moral and legal questions about the justice of our prison system and what it means to actually be free-- questions that we will consider as a community during the discussion following the movie.
