Apr. 24, 2019, 4pm to 5:15pm

Office/Remote Location

Room 101

Dr. Carrie Hyde, Associate Professor of English at UCLA, will deliver a lecture titled "Original Fictions." Dr. Hyde is the author of "Civic Longing: The Speculative Origins of U.S. Citizenship" (Harvard University Press, 2018), which won the 2018 Gustave O. Arlt Award in the Humanities. Her book examines the central role that fiction and other imaginative traditions played in shaping emergent conceptions of "citizenship" in the period before the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment (1868), when the law was not yet the default cultural tradition for asking and answering questions about citizenship.
