Description

The Office of Research Integrity - Human Subjects (ORI-HS) invites the UNLV research community to a campus-wide training on Limited IRB Review and exempt research. The session will be held virtually.

The regulations for the protection of human subjects (the Common Rule) were revised in 2019. One of the major revisions was the expansion of the exempt research categories and the creation of Limited IRB Review for exempt categories 2(iii) and 3(i)(C). These expanded provisions allow for more flexibility for exempt research that collects identifiable, sensitive information.

This session will cover the requirements and limitations on the expanded exempt categories, and will specifically focus on the categories that include Limited IRB Review. If you are a researcher who conducts primarily exempt research projects, this is the perfect session for you!

Following this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Define “exempt” research, and distinguish between exempt research and research that is “excluded” from IRB review
  • Describe exempt categories 2 (survey and interview research) and 3 (benign behavioral interventions), and articulate the requirements and limitations of each category
  • Discuss UNLV institutional standards for exempt research projects
  • Discuss the requirements for Limited IRB Review in the context of exempt categories 2(iii) and 3(i)(C)
