Description

Shantal Marshall from Nevada State College will be the featured speaker at an upcoming School of Life Sciences seminar. Her talk is titled, "Creating the Inclusive Campus: Intentional Interactions that Combat Implicit Bias."

Although people fear being told that they have implicit biases, for fear that may mean that they are racist, these biases are products of basic psychological processes that we use to get through our day. Therefore, it’s likely that many of us have implicit biases that we wish we did not have, often due to incorrect societal representations of groups we don’t belong to. In the world of higher education, these biases and societal representations can work to make students from certain social groups feel that they don’t truly belong in college. However, instructors and administrators can implement “intentional interactions” in and out of the classroom to help all students feel included on the college campus. These intentional interactions are meant to be implemented in the small moments that can indicate to students whether or not they belong in college, including conversations with faculty and staff, feedback on assignments, and even schoolwide messages from the campus leadership.
