Life Science Seminar: Katia Del Rio-Tsonis

Apr. 13, 2018, 1pm to 2pm

Office/Remote Location

Katia Del Rio-Tsonis, professor in the Department of Biology at Miami University, will be the featured speaker at an upcoming School of Life Sciences seminar. Her talk is titled, "Eye tissue Regeneration at the Molecular Age. "

Several animals have the ability to regenerate parts of their eye if damaged or removed. Salamanders can regenerate their lenses completely and functionally at any stage of their lifetime by reprogramming pigmented cells of their iris. On the other hand, embryonic chicks can regenerate their retinas if removed also by reprogramming pigmented cells present in the back of the eye located next to the retina. Her lab is dissecting the molecular mechanisms involved in this reprogramming in both model organisms. Their work will contribute important information that can help develop therapies for the many blinding diseases that currently rip the sight of many people around the world.
