Please join us for the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs' College Colloquia Series on October 4th. Dr. Jayce Farmer, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy and Leadership, will present "Local Government Sustainability Efforts: An Examination of Policy Choice".
More communities are making strides toward efforts to engage in sustainability development. While much of the research in this area agrees that factors such as social attributes, population size and levels of state involvement play vital roles in promoting local government sustainability, little insight has been provided that distinguishes efforts among policy types. For example, do communities focus more on programs such as smart growth and land use-planning as opposed to pollution control and energy conservation? This research assesses the differences among several major types of sustainability initiatives to address questions of this nature. This analysis examines 416 U.S. cities and counties to determine whether differences exist among a typology of sustainability policies. The findings from this research provide insight as to how and why sustainability efforts vary among policy choices.
