Geriatric Webinar: A “Three-Stage Protocol” for Serious Illness Conversations

May. 5, 2021, 12pm to 1pm

Office/Remote Location

May's Geriatric Grand Rounds Webinar for Health Care Professional will help physicians conduct family meetings for health-related concerns. It is challenging to break bad news or lead a family meeting with seriously ill patients. Frequently, physicians get lost in what to say next or struggle to redirect the conversation. The webinar speak will present a "Three-stage protocol" for serious illness conversation. This could be a guide map for clinicians who previously do not have any formal communication training. The details of this protocol will be discussed during the webinar.

This webinar will be presented by our guest speaker Dr. Shunichi Nakagawa who is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Inpatient Palliative Care Services at Columbia University Medical Center, specializing in symptom management and assisting goals of care in seriously ill patients. He also teaches palliative medicine, especially medical communication to medical students, residents, fellows and medical staffs in New York Presbyterian hospital.
