Fighting for Our First Freedoms

When

Mar. 1, 2018, 6pm to 7pm

Office/Remote Location

Room 105

Description

Among the constitutional principles that are the foundational freedoms protected by the First Amendment are: the freedoms of speech, assembly, petition, and of course, freedom of the press. Since the 2016 Presidential elections these constitutional commitments have been called into question in a big way. There have been threats to deny press access to members deemed antagonistic and to reform libel law making it easier to sue the media. When the rights of the free press are threatened, we all feel the effects. But what happens when private corporations deny press access? Does that affect our liberties in the same way? MMA Journalist Ariel Helwani and Professor Ian Bartrum will discuss these important issues regarding our First Amendment Freedoms.
