Nextet New Music Series and the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art present An Evening of New Music and Art with music by guest composer David Conte and new compositions for guitar written by UNLV student composers. The evening is curated by Dr. Jennifer Bellor.

All of the music will be paired with artworks from the Marjorie Barrick Museum’s current exhibitions: Still Motion, The Mojave Project, Spirit of the Land, and “Untitled” (L.A.). Student composers Brittney Benton, Zoe Conrad, Francyl Gawryn, Coreen Levin, and Tasos Peltekis will present compositions juxtaposed with the artworks of their choice. Guitarists Peltekis, Kyle Khembunjong, and Michael Morgan will perform the chosen works.

Conte will be in residence with the UNLV Composition Division and at this event. A selection of his works will be presented, including Of a Summer Evening featuring guitarists Andrew Amaya and Coby Barker; two movements from his String Quartet No. 2, featuring the graduate student string quartet; selections from Three Mexican Folk Songs; and an arrangement of his Hosanna featuring Dr. Shawna Pennock and the UNLV saxophone studio. The performers will choose artworks on display to highlight important aspects of Conte’s music.
