UNLV is committed to cultivating environments and experiences that continually promote performance for a multi-generational, multiracial, multi-background workforce. This is sometimes complicated by the increasingly polarized national climate. Those who demonstrate a high level of cultural intelligence are most effective at realizing this goal. This course will help individuals develop an intercultural mindset and acquire the skills to shift cultural perspective and adapt, or bridge, behavior to cultural commonality and difference.
By attending this session, participants will:
- Discuss how self-awareness and cross-cultural intelligence impact people-related strategies and practices
- Engage in a myriad of interactive exercises to deepen their understanding of how diversity, inclusion, and social justice terms impact a manager’s ability to foster an equitable environment
- Learn how implicit (unconscious) bias impacts leadership capabilities among diverse populations
About the Trainers
Dr. Makesha Spence
Dr. Makesha Spence is Senior Consultant at DRI Consulting and Managing Partner, DRIC Jamaica. She holds a PhD in Psychology and master's degree in Adult Education. She is also a certified Performance Coach. As a former University President and faculty member, Dr. Spence is familiar with many of the realities faced by University stakeholders at all levels. She also has over 20 years’ experience in instructional design and training. Dr. Spence has designed and facilitated multiple sessions in the areas of Cultural Humility, Intellectual Humility, Implicit Bias, and Diversity.
Dr. John Fennig
Dr. Fennig offers 30 plus years of experience as an executive level manager and consultant. And 30 years advising faculty and staff at over a dozen universities as coach, work team facilitator, trouble shooter, and reorganization expert. He has special skills and interests working with the gifted/talented and high potential leaders of medium and large public and private organizations, family-owned companies, and entrepreneurial start-ups. Clients of Dr. Fennig have learned and applied intellectual humility in service to the dual goals of being cognitively and emotionally “smart”. Effective in their jobs at all levels of leadership, and for what each real-world leadership situation calls for.
Rhovine Small is a Senior Consultant at DRI Consulting. She has a Master of Science in Counselling and Consulting Psychology at the International University of the Caribbean in Jamaica. Her experience with education and workforce training adds to her strengths as a consultant. Rhovine’s role at DRI Consulting complements her graduate training and passion for training and leadership development in the areas of intellectual humility, emotional intelligence and mindfulness. She promotes openness to new ideas and perspectives, and willingness to be receptive to change and new ways of thinking in her work with clients.
