Description
The Donna Beam Gallery is pleased to present City of Second Chances, an exhibition produced by Los Angeles based artists Mariam Alcantara, Sophia Berman, and Shevaun Wright. The artists are presenting site-generated Installations with a video that evoke an atmosphere of illusion and investigations of fantasies and glamour known to Las Vegas. The exhibition is curated by Professor Pasha Rafat and runs from Oct. 21 to Dec. 2.
The invited artists are:
- Mariam Alcantara (MFA UCLA, '18) an artist and educator whose works focus on interpersonal relationships, body language, and shared physical movement.
- Sophia Berman, a Los Angeles-based artist whose work deals with mediation and participation in pop and sub culture. She received a BA in Art at UCLA in 2019.
- Shevaun Wright, a lawyer and artist engaged in the growing field of legal aesthetics. Her practice is interdisciplinary and research based, utilizing the contractual medium and the notion of the ‘social contract,’ as well as re-contextualized dialogues as a tool for engaging in institutional legal and artistic critique. She has master’s degrees in art and law including a Master of Fine Arts from UCLA’s Interdisciplinary Studio program.
We wish to acknowledge that we are situated on the traditional homelands of the Nuwuvi, Southern Paiute People. We offer gratitude for the land itself, for those who have stewarded it for generations, and for the opportunity to study, learn, and be in community with this land.
